The goal of yoga, no matter what type, is the same:

To develop a greater understanding and awareness of the body, to free oneself from negative thoughts that drain one's energies, to still the mind and to strengthen mental and spiritual balance. Yoga postures remove obstructions from the body to enhance energy and well being and achieve inner peace.

In other words yoga makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation can support a healthier body, mind and spirit.
